The masked Vejigante is a vibrant and iconic character originating from Loíza, Puerto Rico, known for its role in the island’s traditional festivals, particularly the Fiestas de Santiago Apóstol. These colorful figures are adorned with elaborate masks made from papier-mâché, often featuring exaggerated facial features and horns, symbolizing a blend of African, Spanish, and Taíno cultural influences. The vejigante’s drum-heavy music of bomba y plena comes from African traditions. The name “vejigante” comes from the Spanish words vejiga, meaning “cow bladder”, and gigante, meaning “giant”. The tradition of using devil masks during Carnival to scare people into going to church dates back to 17th century Spain. The Taíno, who were skilled mask makers, contributed native elements to the vejigante’s most important part, the mask. The masks are said to blend Yoruba-influenced myths and designs with images of Catholic saints and Taíno deities.
The vejigante’s costume includes a cape and suit typically crafted from bright, flowing fabric, designed to enhance their lively and mischievous dance performances. The character typically carries an inflated cow or goat bladder that’s dried, painted, and filled with seeds, which he uses as a weapon to hit other revelers. The mask, called a careta, is usually meant to be scary and feature sharp fangs and forward-pointing horns. There are two distinct styles of vejigantes, depending on the festival they’re associated with:
Ponce style
Associated with Carnival, these vejigantes have papier-mâché masks with snouts and many horns.
Loíza style
Associated with the Feast of Santiago in late July, these vejigantes have masks carved from coconut husks with buckteeth and three horns.
