The Momotxorro is the most prevalent character in the carnaval of Altsasu. He is incredibly ornery, walking the streets with his sarde (the their wooden pitchfork like instrument ), frightening and “attacking” whoever crosses their path.
The Momotxorro wears large horns and their faces are hidden behind handkerchiefs or horse hair. They wear a white shirt or large apron-like cloth which they cover in cattle blood. On their backs they are covered with heavy sheepskins.
They wear blue pants, white socks and sandals. They create noise by ringing their cowbells that are sewn into their sheepskins or hung around their waists, and by slapping their blood-dipped sardes against the ground.
