“Qhapaq Chunchu” Paucartambo, Cusco Region, Peru

There are nineteen dance troupes at the Virgin Del Carmen festival taking place in Paucartambo, each with their own unique masks, costumes and dances. The “Qhapaq Chunchu” dance represents the native warriors of the jungle of Kosñipata, known as the ”wild people.” When the Qhapaq Chunchu join the Virgen del Carmen Festivity, they usually bring fruits, huayruro (a native plant to Peru who’s seeds are used in handcrafted jewelry) and other products that were used to trade with the Qollasuyo inhabitants. These dancers play the role of the guardians of the Virgin Del Carmen. They are in charge of escorting her throughout the streets of the festival.
