Kukeri, Veselinovo village, Tundzha municipality, Yambol region, Bulgaria, 2023

Kukeri bounce in unison, ringing their many bells, performing rituals to chase away ghosts and evil spirits and welcome the new year with health and happiness. With the coming of Spring, thousands of spectators gather to witness the kukeri. It is a communion taken by the villagers, immersing themselves in the chaos, wealth of colour, and sorcery of fertility rites.

Every year between the first and second Sunday prior to Lent (Zagovezni) the Kukeri in the East of Bulgaria perform their dances and rituals. The Kukerlandia festival is held annually in the town of Yambol within this period, where dozens of Kukeri assemble to perform for the masses.

Yambol Region Kukeri are known for their beautifully ornate masks. Each one is unique and made by hand, elaborately decorated with beads, sequins, fringes, and bright ribbons.
