Jumali, Group “Belodreshkovtsi”, Karavelovo Village, Karlovo Municipality, Plovdiv Province, Bulgaria, 2024

The Jumali of Karavelovo wear white shirts and white trousers, a symbol of purity as well as new beginnings of life. A helmet is used as the base to make the mask, and on top are artificial flowers. Descending from it are colorful ribbons. The beautiful colors and flower arrangements symbolize the coming of spring.

The beliefs are that kukeri chase evil, so to the colorful and beautiful masks they add horns and sometimes teeth to add a creepy touch. The face of the mask is made of black fabric sewn with beads. Each kuker carries bells, in this group it is important that the bells do not touch each other, which is very unique. They believe the bells should not hit each other to maintain the purity of the sound. The bells are strung on a belt, each is bandaged in two places with a sling to stay at a distance from each other for a clear ring.

In the group “Belodreshkovtsi” there are 50+ men, children and also women who participate. Now, they tell us the women are no different than men in their group and they embrace the equality in today’s practice. Only the leader carries in his hands the parade sword symbolizing the victory over evil.
