Without doubt one of the most popular figures of the Bolivian Carnaval de Oruro is the 𝘫𝘶𝘬𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘪. The Andean “bespectacled” bear, the 𝘫𝘶𝘬𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘪, lives at different ecological levels of the Andean cordilera. For this reason he is seen as a mediator between different entities, god-like and human, or between different groups of people. He is present in several dances from the Andes in Bolivia, in particular the Diablada and the the Morenada. The bear is a symbol of strength, courage, and constant readiness and dedication to help those in need.
This dance is performed by the Fundación Socio Cultural Diablada Boliviana led by Nelly Zapapa (Virginia, USA)
